AAW, Sharif Opposition Criticizes Hassan Sheikh’s Foreign Deals and Electoral Process Amid Political Strife and Constitutional Crisis

Mogadishu, (Idil News) – Somalia’s opposition has intensified criticism of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s regime, accusing it of undermining democratic principles through opaque foreign agreements and a contentious electoral process.

Disputed Foreign Deals

Key opposition figures have condemned recent agreements between Somalia and foreign nations, particularly with Ethiopia, alleging they were signed without parliamentary oversight. Critics claim this bypass reflects an authoritarian streak within Mohamud’s administration, raising alarms over governance transparency.

“This government is operating unilaterally, disregarding constitutional protocols and parliamentary checks,” read a statement from opposition leaders shared on social media platform X. They further argued that such deals could have far-reaching implications for Somalia’s sovereignty and regional stability.

Electoral Controversy

The opposition has also expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of elections, describing the recently formed electoral committee as illegitimate. Calls for international actors to withhold support for upcoming elections have gained traction, with critics accusing the government of orchestrating a flawed process.

While Mohamud has proposed a shift to a one-person, one-vote electoral model, opposition voices have dismissed it as a diversionary tactic. “This is political theater aimed at creating confusion rather than genuine democratic reform,” said an opposition spokesperson.

Regional and International Dimensions

The situation is further complicated by tensions with Somaliland, the self-declared independent region in northern Somalia. Somaliland recently conducted its presidential elections, garnering international attention despite Mogadishu’s position on its sovereignty. Opposition leaders have pointed out inconsistencies in the federal government’s approach, which simultaneously labels Somaliland a security threat while engaging in dialogue over its elections.

Security Challenges

Amid the political turmoil, security concerns persist. The militant group Al-Shabaab has carried out several recent attacks, including in the capital Mogadishu, underscoring the fragile state of Somalia’s security apparatus. The opposition has linked governance failures to the government’s inability to effectively address these threats.

Broader Implications

The opposition’s critique of foreign deals and the electoral framework underscores deeper struggles over governance, accountability, and Somalia’s future direction. Calls for international intervention, or at least a reevaluation of support for the current administration, reflect growing unease over the trajectory of Somalia’s political landscape.
