The first litmus test for Mr. Mohamoud Youssouf’s leadershio and vision for Africa will be what he says or doesn’t say about the threat posed by #ISIS to Africa. #ISIS is making its last and most vicious stand in the strategic mountains of #Puntland, Somalia.
If the newly elected Chairperson of the #AUC fails to immediately address the ISIS menace so close to his homeland, the only conclusion that could be drawn is that #Peace, #security and #prosperity for the Horn, Africa and the world are not among Mr. Youssouf’s topmost priorities.
The ISIS menace imperils African peoples and economies from the Atlantic coast of West Africa, across the Sahel to the mountains of Puntland overlooking the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean. From the strategic waterways of the Mediterranean and Red Sea to the Cape. The US Africa Command based in Mr. Youssouf’s country, Djibouti, warned about the consequences of ISIS reestablishing itself in the strategically located mountains of Puntland, prompting President Trump to order the first air strike of his administration against ISIS hideouts in the #Calmiskad Mountain.
The Africa We Want,” will remain a monumental fiction or a fraudulent scheme, if the leader of the premier Pan-African body remains silent or indifferent in the face of the deadliest and most demonic menace encroaching on the continent on all sides. Silence would amount to the greatest gift presented to the demons of terror. A license to rob Africa and Africans of freedom, dignity, agency and most valuable resource, land.
Finally, the Government and people of #Puntland are fighting ISIS alone. This is not only unfair. It’s also irresponsible and immoral. Most importantly, it renders #AUSSOM and African Peace Facility of the #EU hollow, meaningless and wasteful.
Best wishes to Mohamoud Youssouf.
