A plane belonging to the US Marines crashed on an island in the north of Australia on Sunday, killing three of the marines and injuring 20 others. The accident happened during a training exercise in which several countries were participating, according to the officials.
Three of the soldiers were confirmed to have died on Melville Island, and five of the 23 on the plane were flown to a hospital 80 kilometers away from Darwin for treatment. The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey tiltrotor crashed around 9:30 am local time in the country according to a statement from the Marines.
The statement added that the cause of the crash is under investigation.
The Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, said that only American soldiers were injured in this training, which was jointly attended by the forces of the United States, Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines and East Timor.
