Bosaso, (Idil News) โ Security armed forces in Puntland have made significant strides in their ongoing offensive against ISIS-S (Islamic State in Somalia), including seizing advanced weaponry, dismantling key terrorist strongholds, and arresting suspects linked to extremist groups. The large scale operation, dubbed โHillaacโ or โLightning,โ underscores Puntland’s ongoing dedication to combating terrorism within its territorial boundaries.
Seizure of Advanced Weaponry
In a first for Puntland forces have seized drones, including “suicide” and “explosive-laden” models, during operations in the Al-Miskad mountains in the Bari region. These areas are known strongholds for ISIS militants. Forces also intercepted and neutralized drones used for reconnaissance and attacks. The discovery of such advanced weaponry points to an increasing sophistication in the tactics and arsenal of terrorist groups operating in the mountain areas.
Arrests and Strategic Operations
As part of the campaign, Puntland authorities apprehended a transportation vehicle on the Garowe-Galkayo road and arrested foreign militia members suspected of ties to ISIS.
On 31 December 2024, The operation turned out to have successfully foiled the base attack on Tog-Jaale in Bari.ย
In addition to the arrests, Puntland forces destroyed several ISIS bases, capturing weapons, drones, and other critical supplies. Reports from security forces point out that a dozen foreign fighters were killed and strategic positions held by ISIS were taken, delivering a major blow to the groupโs activities.
Local support and FGS envy
The offensive has received stronger local support, with community mobilization aiding Puntlandโs efforts against militant groups. It is noteworthy, Puntland military operation has been publicly denied by the Somali federal government (Hassa Sheikh Mohamud regime).
Challenges and Implications
Thanks to these victories, Puntland faces a dual challenge in countering both ISIS and Al-Shabaab, groups that continue to pose a significant threat in the Horn of Africa. While the seizure of several hundred of drones and other advanced weaponry signals the urgency of disrupting supply lines and financial networks, such actions also underscore the evolving threat landscape in the region.
Puntlandโs proactive measures signal a robust response to terrorism, but long-term success will require sustained efforts and continued collaboration with local and international partners.
