In a troubling turn of events, Somalia’s President and the Speakers of its two parliamentary chambers have steered the country toward a dangerous political trajectory. By adopting a patchwork of self-serving legislation and policies, they appear intent on gerrymandering the political process to consolidate power. This maneuvering not only undermines the fragile political settlement painstakingly built over the years but also stifles the very political inclusivity and accountability the nation desperately needs.
Somalia’s fledgling democracy, long supported by international efforts, now faces a litmus test. The government’s Orwellian misuse of the principle of “one person, one vote” serves as a glaring example. What should be a rallying cry for inclusive governance has instead become a tool to advance narrow, sectarian agendas. This doublespeak mocks the very essence of democracy, raising urgent questions about the true intentions of the current leadership.
At its core, the government’s actions signal a dangerous attempt to write the rules of the game, select its referees, and dictate its outcomes. Such centralization of power threatens to unravel the delicate balance that has held Somalia together. Without swift action, these policies could erode trust, deepen divisions, and push the country toward political disarray.
What Somalia needs now is a credible and responsible opposition—a force that can challenge this power grab not through violence or retribution but through principled advocacy for inclusivity, transparency, and accountability. The opposition must rise to the occasion, becoming a voice for the disenfranchised and a counterweight to the government’s overreach.
The international community, which has long played a pivotal role in stabilizing Somalia, must also step in. Its reluctance to engage risks being seen as tacit approval of these alarming developments. History reminds us that Somalia’s politicians have often been tethered to the negotiating table by the firm hand of international oversight. It is imperative that global actors reaffirm their commitment to Somalia’s democratic project by ensuring fair play and protecting the fragile political settlement.
Somalia’s leaders must realize that the path they are treading is perilous. They have a choice: to uphold the principles of democratic governance or to plunge the nation into deeper instability. For the sake of the Somali people and the region, we hope they choose wisely.
As the world watches, the question remains: will Somalia’s fragile democracy endure this test, or will it crumble under the weight of unchecked ambition? The answer lies in the hands of its leaders—and the vigilance of those willing to hold them accountable.
