Ethiopian Troops Enter Somali Regions, Prompt Rapid Withdrawal

Mogadishu, (IDNE, News Desk) heavily armed Ethiopian troops not affiliated with the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) have crossed into Somalia, specifically entering the Gedo and Hiiraan regions, according to local journalists and residents.

On Friday, approximately 3,000 Ethiopian soldiers reached the town of Matabaan in the Hiiraan region, an area previously devoid of foreign military presence. Bashir Abdirahman Shekeeye, the governor of Matabaan, confirmed the incursion, noting that the troops had entered the district from the direction of Beledweyne.

Following discussions between the Ethiopian forces, the district administration, and federal government officials, the troops have since retreated to their initial positions.

This incident occurs amidst heightened tensions and strategic shifts, as the Somali government recently declared its intention to withdraw all Ethiopian military personnel from the country.
