Mogadishu, (IDNE, News Desk) — An attempted jailbreak at Mogadishu Central Prison has been thwarted, resulting in the deaths of several militant inmates. Reports from local residents indicated sustained gunfire in the vicinity of the prison, causing widespread alarm.
According to local media, the incident began when suspected militant inmates opened fire and hurled hand grenades at the prison guards. It remains unclear whether the weapons were smuggled into the prison or if they were obtained from another source within the facility. Initial reports, however, suggest that there were no external attackers involved.
At least four people were killed in the shootout, and dozens were injured. The violent clash took place primarily in the section of the prison housing inmates sentenced to death, raising concerns about the security measures in place for high-risk detainees.
Security forces have since regained control of the situation, but the prison remains on high alert. Investigations are ongoing to determine how the inmates acquired the weapons and to prevent future incidents.
