Mogadishu Leader Appoints New Commanders to Somali National Army, Sparking Debate

Mogadishu (IDNE) — In a significant move, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has issued a decree appointing four new commanders to the Somali National Army (SNA). The appointments have ignited considerable discussion, with many interpreting the creation of these positions as a deviation from the traditional structure of the SNA. Below is an overview of the new commanders and their backgrounds.

Commander of the Special Forces: Major General Ahmed Abdullahi Sheikh

Major General Ahmed Abdullahi Sheikh, originally from Qardho, brings a diverse and international background to his new role. Previously residing in Sweden, Sheikh is closely related to General Asad Diyaano, the Chairman of the Mideeye Political Party in Puntland. His military career includes a significant tenure with the Puntland Security Force (PSF), trained by the United States, where he was responsible for Galkaio.

Sheikh’s career highlights include serving as the Chief of Protocol for Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid and later as Commander of the Danab Brigade. With President Mohamud’s return to power, Sheikh was tasked with organizing and preparing forces trained by the UAE, underscoring his pivotal role in the nation’s military development.

Commander of Reconnaissance and Intelligence: Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Abdullahi Beeryare

Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Abdullahi Beeryare, hailing from Dhusamareb in Galmudug, has significant ties to the Ahlu Sunna religious group. During President Farmaajo’s administration, Beeryare was appointed Commander of the Danab Brigade but was later reassigned to lead the Directorate of Reconnaissance and Intelligence with President Mohamud’s re-election.

Known for his strong relationship with the U.S. government, which trains the Danab Brigade, Beeryare has been instrumental in exposing the misappropriation of supplies and aid intended for the Danab forces, highlighting his commitment to transparency and accountability within the military.

Commander of Training: Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Iise Ahmed

Ahmed Iise Ahmed, from the Awdal region, initially served in the Somaliland Military before advancing his military education in Ethiopia, where he earned a master’s degree in military sciences. Discontent with the leadership under General Nuux Taani, Ahmed defected to the Somali National Army during President Farmaajo’s administration.

His high level of education and dedication have been noted, making him a significant asset in his new role as Commander of Training, where he is expected to enhance the capabilities and professionalism of the SNA.

Commander of General Support: Lieutenant Colonel Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud

Lieutenant Colonel Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud, originally from Jowhar, has held various roles within the Somali National Army, including positions in the Financial Directorate. His extensive experience in financial management and administrative capacities equips him well for overseeing general support functions in the army.

Mahmoud’s appointment is seen as a move to ensure efficient logistical and operational support within the SNA, crucial for maintaining the army’s overall effectiveness.

A Move Towards Reform and Strengthening

These appointments are perceived by some as an effort to reform and strengthen the Somali National Army by integrating leaders with diverse backgrounds and extensive experience. However, the integration of these new commands has sparked debate regarding its alignment with the established military structure.

President Mohamud’s new appointments aim to reform and strengthen the Somali National Army (SNA), addressing internal and external challenges to enhance its effectiveness and cohesion.
