Puntland Accuses Somalia’s Federal Government of Failing to Support Its Fight Against Daesh and Al-Shabaab

Antwerpen, (Idil News) – The Puntland State has accused the federal Somali government of neglecting its security forces in their ongoing offensives against Daesh (ISIS) and Al-Shabaab militants. The declaration was made in a press release by Puntland’s diplomatic representative to Benelux countries and the European Union.

Puntland officials declare that despite their armed force’s successes in counter-terrorism operations over the past five months, they have received neither military nor logistical assistance from Somalia and/or the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) freshly succeeded by the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). The release revealed that both Daesh and Al-Shabaab remain significant threats to peace and security in the region.

The group has a relatively small presence in Somalia compared to an Al-Qaeda affiliate, al-Shabaab, but experts have warned of growing activity.

Daesh (ISIS) has numerous atrocities in its pursuit of establishing a violent caliphate, while Al-Shabaab was notorious for attacks within Somalia within Mogadishu. Both groups have been designated as terrorist organizations by the international community.

The Puntland President, Said Abdullahi Deni, has urged the global community to step in where the central government has fallen short. “We call on the international community to provide military aid and effective support to eliminate these terrorist threats and promote global peace and stability,” the statement read.

The diplomatic representative appealed to the United Nations, African Union, Arab League, and IGAD member states, as well as diplomatic missions from countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. The plea emphasized the critical need for international collaboration to strengthen Puntland’s counter-terrorism efforts.

Puntland, located in the northeastern part of the Horn of Africa, has historically maintained its own security forces independent of the federal government and currently has strained relations with Mogadishu over the constitutional crisis. The current situation highlights growing concerns over Somalia’s fragmented approach to national security and the lack of cohesive support in combating militant threats.

The document is a press release from the Representative of Puntland Diplomatic State of Somalia Benelux and Head of Mission of the European Union, dated 22 January 2025, located in the Belgium city of Antwerpen.
