Boosaaso, (Idil News) – Puntland’s armed forces have successfully captured the towns of Turmasaale and Janno-Jiifta in the Bari region, dealing a significant blow to Islamic State in Somalia (IS-S), local media reported on Friday.
The operation, part of the broader Hilaac Campaign against ISIS militants, saw Puntland troops engaging in heavy combat, clearing landmines and neutralizing drones. According to military sources, at least 13 ISIS militants were killed in Turmasaale during the assault.
Strategic Capture of Turmasaale
Turmasaale, located at the mouth of the Togga Jeceel valley, had been a fortified stronghold for ISIS, used for staging attacks and as a supply route. The village’s strategic position at the valley’s entrance made it a critical target for Puntland forces. The operation involved the use of technicals equipped with mounted machine guns and cannon, which proved decisive in breaking through ISIS defenses.
“The capture of Turmasaale is not just a territorial gain but a strategic milestone that disrupts ISIS’s operational capabilities in the region,” a Puntland military spokesperson, told Idil News.
Challenges and Gains in Togga Jeceel
The Togga Jeceel valley, running northwest from Turmasaale, has been a known stronghold for ISIS, with the group exploiting the valley’s rugged terrain for fortifications including bunkers, tunnels, and weapon emplacements. Intelligence reports indicate that ISIS has deployed heavy weaponry, including machine guns, mortars and IEDs, making the area a formidable challenge.
Thankfully, with Turmasaale under control, Puntland forces now have a tactical advantage. The ability to deploy heavy firepower from newly secured positions, coupled with the mobility of their technicals, allows for a more dynamic approach to dismantling remaining ISIS defensive terrain.
Impact on Puntland Security
The operation has not only curtailed ISIS’s activities but also provided a morale boost to Puntland forces and local residents, many of whom have been displaced by the ongoing campaign. The Puntland government has called for international support to aid in stabilization efforts and to assist the displaced population.
“While we have achieved a significant victory, the fight against extremism in our region is far from over,” said the Puntland vice president, Ilyas Lugator. “We need continued support to ensure these gains develop into lasting peace.”
The operation’s success could potentially pave the way for further incursions into other ISIS-controlled areas, reshaping the security dynamics in Bari, Puntland. Still, with ISIS fighters known to commit suicide assaults, the troops remain on high alert for counterattacks.
