Garowe, (Idil News) β A military court in Puntland, a semi-autonomous region in northeastern Somalia, has sentenced two men in absentia for using online platforms to promote ISIS propaganda and undermine counterterrorism efforts. Mohamed-Deeq Yacqub Siyad, currently residing in Germany, received a 10-year prison sentence, while Ali Ahmed Ali, also known as “Iley” and based in Sweden, was sentenced to five years.Β Β
The court accused the two propagandists of spreading disinformation to discredit Puntlandβs military operations in the Calmiskaad Mountains, a known militant stronghold. Both individuals have one month to file an appeal.Β Β
A spokesperson for the Puntland administration described the verdict as a significant step in combating terrorism, emphasizing the region’s commitment to addressing threats both on the battlefield and in the digital realm. “This verdict underscores Puntland’s determination to counter misinformation and extremist propaganda that undermines our counterterrorism efforts,” the spokesperson said.Β Β
Digital Frontlines in the Fight Against Extremism
Puntland has been a key battleground in fight against ISIS, particularly in the northeastern Calmiskaad Mountains, where militants have established a foothold. Recognizing the growing influence of extremist groups online, state authorities have intensified efforts to curb their digital activities.Β Β
ISIS and other militant groups have used platforms like Twitter (Now X) and Telegram to recruit fighters, disseminate propaganda and coordinate attacks. Their sophisticated media Propaganda often include high-quality videos and real-time updates during operations.Β Β
Challenges of Enforcement
While the sentences highlight Puntlandβs proactive stance, enforcing the verdicts may prove difficult due to the menβs current locations in Europe. Legal experts suggest that this case could set a precedent for addressing the misuse of digital platforms by individuals abroad. However, extraditing the men to serve their sentences will likely require diplomatic efforts and international cooperation.Β Β
Broader Security Context
The verdict comes amid intensified military campaigns by Puntlandβs forces, which recently captured a strategic militant base in the Calmiskaad Mountains. The stateβs armed forces have also launched operations to secure key supply routes and disrupt militant activities.Β Β
In addition to military efforts, Puntland has taken steps to strengthen its governance and legal frameworks, including prosecuting individuals accused of spreading extremist propaganda. The state has also established its own air force to bolster its security capabilities.Β Β
Puntland has repeatedly called on the international community for support, urging broader cooperation to address the rising threat of ISIS in the region.Β Β
As Puntland ramps up its counterterrorism measures, this case highlights the complex interplay between digital threats and traditional security challenges in Somaliaβs fight against extremism.
