Puntland Police Seize Modified Loudspeakers Containing Suicide Drones

Galkayo, PUNTLAND — The Puntland Police Force has intercepted a bus in Galkayo  carrying five modified electrodynamic speaker drivers,   each containing a suicide drone.   The discovery was made during a routine security operation in the surrounding area, leading to the seizure of the drones and the arrest of multiple suspects.

The police became suspicious of the vehicle after noticing unusual behavior as it left a checkpoint in central Galkayo.   Their concerns were confirmed when one of the modified speakers accidentally fell, triggering a small explosion.   Upon closer inspection, each of the five drones was found to be equipped with Kamikzade and Shaheed components, with four designed to carry explosives and one configured for high-altitude surveillance and filming.

Further investigations revealed that another loudspeaker previously seized by the Nugaal Police also contained a hidden drone, bringing the total number of captured drones to six.   Authorities believe the drones were reportedly owned by the militant group Al-Shabaab and were intended for use in Mogadishu and had been smuggled into the region through Bosaso Port.

Several terrorist suspects have been detained in connection with the incident,  including individuals traveling to Garowe – Galkayo highway, as well as others at the bus station. An ongoing investigation aims to uncover the full scope of the operation and prevent future dangerous goods.

Puntland authorities are on high alert, as the state has been vigilant about threats from Al-Shabaab.  The capture of these drones comes after the militants’ continued efforts to innovate in their tactics, posing a significant challenge to security forces in the region and broader in the Horn of Africa.
