Garowe, (Idil News) – 10 December 2024, The 10th Puntland Regional Football Tournament officially commenced on Tuesday afternoon in Garowe with a colorful opening ceremony graced by Puntland Vice President Ilyas Osman Lugator. The competition organized by the Puntland Football Association (PFA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and sponsored by Golis Telecom, the tournament brings together teams from nine regions of Puntland in a bid to promote peace, unity, and development through sports.
Vice President Lugator lauded the regular organization of the competition and highlighted its contribution to promoting social integration and development.
Sports play a crucial role in uniting communities and encouraging youth engagement. We are proud of our Ministry of Youth and Sports under the leadership of Minister Hodan Said Hassan for their efforts in making this event a success.
He also extended his gratitude to the PFA, regional administrations, players, fans and Golis Telecom for their pivotal roles in making the tournament a reality.
Tournament Structure
The month-long competition will see teams representing Puntland nine regions: Bari, Ceyn, Karkaar, Mudug, Nugaal, Haylaan, Raas Casayr, Sanaag, and Sool. Matches are being held at Mire Aware Stadium with most games starting at 3:30 PM, except for semi-finals and the final, which are set for 3:00 PM.
In the group stage, each team will compete against others in their respective groups to secure a place in the knockout stage.
The semi-finals are scheduled for December 27 and 28, with the final match slated for December 31 to crown the regional champion.
Opening Match
The tournament kicked off with an exciting opening match between the Nugaal region, nicknamed (The Horses) and Raas Casayr, known as (The Fishers) Nugaal secured a 1-0 victory, thanks to a decisive goal by Abbaska,
Unity Through Sports
The Puntland Regional Football Tournament has become a cornerstone event in the region that promotes fitness competition and camaraderie for the youth while strengthening peace in the region. The competition also serves as a platform to showcase budding talent, with many young players aspiring to represent Somalia at the national and international levels.
