A Somali agricultural expert, Amun Abdullahi who had returned from Sweden to support local farming initiatives in her homeland was shot dead on Friday, October 18, 2024, in Afgoye, Lower Shabelle. Amun, an alumna of top agricultural universities in Sweden, had embarked on a mission to teach Somali farmers self-sufficiency through modern farming techniques, reducing the need for foreign aid.
According to reports, two unidentified gunmen shot Amun while she was working on her farm. Local sources believe she was targeted due to her efforts to promote self-reliance among Somali farmers — an initiative that threatened the interests of those benefiting from Somalia’s dependence on international aid. Her death has raised concerns about the safety of educated professionals seeking to contribute to the country’s development.
Amun’s killing underscores the precarious situation for Somali intellectuals and reformers who face significant risks as they challenge the status quo.
